Cariñena
DESCRIPTION
The Cariñena grape is another of the few varieties typically native to the lower reaches of the Ribera del Ebro. It is, in fact, one of the few examples in the world of the name of a municipality, variety and designation of origin being one and the same. This variety prefers warm and dry climes since time is required to achieve strength, while lowering the acidity. As it buds late, it is naturally protected from the dreaded spring frosts. It produces wines that are deep in colour, intense in their tannins and beautifully acidic. Thus, it is a perfect complement to Garnacha (among others), while also offering high quality single varietal wines (particularly from the old vines). The wines are deep cherry in colour with purple hues, while black fruit and violets stand out on the nose. These wines age very well – ideally in wooden casks that help round out the tannins.
